Noise tuned mass dampers
Passive tuned mass dampers
Tuned mass dampers are designed for situations where main systems like gearboxes or generators in wind turbines undergo significant undesired vibrations. They are based on a system comprising a spring and a weight which adds damping to the main system.
ESM has developed tuned mass dampers (TMD) which are three-dimensionally adjustable. Vibrations can so be reduced in all three translational directions by only one single damper without any time-consuming development effort. These adjustable TMDs are designed modularly and can be provided with vibrating masses varying from approximately 40kg to approx. 500kg. These dampers cover a frequency range from approx. 50Hz to 600Hz. However, not every combination of mass and frequency can be produced. The three-dimensional damper of ESM is simply attached to the structure by a central screw.
Dampers of different size as well as different mass and/or frequency can be produced and provided according to your needs. Please do not hesitate to contact us.

Temperature-compensated tuned mass dampers
The temperature-compensated tuned mass damper is an enhanced version of the 3D TMD.
It’s a passive, elastomer-based system whose natural frequency doesn’t change with the temperature. This robust TMD requires no power supply. It’s available in a wide range of masses, frequencies, damping and temperature characteristics.
If required, the TMD can be tuned to a specific temperature-frequency behaviour.
Properties
- Temperature compensation requires no power supply
- Specific temperature-frequency characteristics possible
- Available in a wide range of masses, frequencies and damping
Applications
- Machines and components subject to temperature fluctuation
- Can be used for a wide frequency range
- Positioned on the gearbox or generator
- Wind turbines, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, vehicle construction
Adaptive tuned mass dampers
ESM’s adaptive tuned mass damper is a damped or undamped system comprising a spring and a weight which can change its natural frequency. This is required if multiple undesired frequencies are present in the speed range of a machine or large excitation forces need to be neutralized.
Unlike the 3D TMD, the adaptive TMD includes a control and actuator unit which adjusts the spring according to an input signal (e.g. rotor speed, traverse path).
Properties
- The frequency of the adaptive TMD follows a selected input signal
- Low power consumption of the control and actor unit
Applications
- Counteracts multiple natural frequencies in the speed range of a machine
- Can be used for a wide frequency range
- Positioned on the gearbox or generator
- Wind turbines, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, vehicle construction
Active tuned mass dampers
ESM’s active tuned mass dampers (TMD) cancel out speed-dependent vibrations by counteracting the excitation forces of a disrupted main system. Each TMD consists of an actuator, a control system and a power electronic unit generating forces of several kilonewtons. All the components of the TMD are mutually balanced so that the TMD force acts in precisely the opposite direction of the excitation force.
Properties
- High damping
- Cancellation of multiple harmonics
- Suitable for excitation and eigenmode issues
Applications
- Can be used for a wide frequency range
- Positioned on the gearbox or generator
- Wind turbines, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, vehicle construction
